Entry-level versions of electric vehicles often come with noticeable compromises, especially in driving range. The newly introduced BMW iX3 40 takes a different approach. Positioned as the more affordable option in the lineup, it still delivers solid performance and long-distance capability, making it less of a stripped-down alternative and more of a balanced offering.

While this figure falls short of the larger-battery variant’s claimed 805 kilometers (500 miles), it remains competitive within its segment.

When adjusted to more conservative testing standards, the expected real-world range would likely still exceed 300 miles, which places it firmly in long-range territory for a base configuration. This suggests that buyers opting for the smaller battery are not sacrificing usability for daily driving or longer trips.


Performance and Driving Characteristics

Switching to a single-motor setup means the iX3 40 sends power exclusively to the rear wheels. Despite the absence of all-wheel drive, output figures remain respectable at 315 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved in 5.9 seconds, which is only modestly slower than its dual-motor counterpart.

The reduced drivetrain complexity also contributes to a lower overall vehicle weight. While official figures for this version have not been finalized, it is expected to be lighter than the dual-motor model, which weighs around 2,285 kilograms (5,037 pounds). This weight reduction could translate into more responsive handling, particularly on winding roads.


Charging Capabilities and Efficiency

Charging performance is slightly reduced compared to the higher-end version, but remains practical. The iX3 40 supports a peak DC fast-charging rate of 300 kW, compared to 400 kW for the more powerful model. As a result, charging from 10% to 80% takes about 21 minutes under optimal conditions.

BMW indicates that a short charging session can still be effective, with up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range added in roughly ten minutes. While not class-leading, this level of charging speed should meet the needs of most drivers, especially when combined with the vehicle’s efficient energy consumption.


Speed and Equipment Differences

There are a few additional trade-offs to consider. The top speed is limited to 200 km/h (124 mph), slightly below that of the dual-motor version. For most markets, this difference will have minimal practical impact, though it may matter for drivers who frequently travel on unrestricted highways.

BMW has not confirmed whether a single-motor variant paired with the larger battery will be introduced in the future. Such a configuration could theoretically maximize range even further, but for now, the iX3 40 remains focused on balancing cost and capability.


Pricing and Market Position

One of the most significant advantages of the iX3 40 is its pricing. In Germany, the model starts at €63,400, representing a reduction of €7,500 compared to the higher-spec version. This price gap positions the vehicle as a compelling entry point for buyers seeking a premium electric SUV without stretching their budget.

Rather than feeling like a compromised alternative, the iX3 40 appears to offer what many customers actually need: sufficient range, respectable performance, and lower upfront cost. This combination may make it the most practical choice within the lineup.
