According to the driver involved, a spoken request intended to switch off interior reading lamps instead caused the car’s headlights to deactivate while the vehicle was moving. The incident reportedly involved a Lynk & Co Z20, and dashboard camera footage circulating online appears to show the sequence of events. While human error is a common factor in collisions, a software misinterpretation disabling exterior lighting is a less familiar scenario.


How the Error Occurred

Based on the driver’s account, the problem began with a natural-language command aimed at turning off cabin lights. The car’s voice assistant allegedly interpreted that request more broadly, shutting down all lighting systems, including the main headlights.

When the driver attempted to restore the headlights using another voice instruction, the system reportedly responded that the action “could not be completed.” Without forward illumination, visibility dropped significantly, and the vehicle then collided with a central divider.

Modern vehicles typically include safeguards to prevent essential systems from being disabled in unsafe conditions. However, as voice interfaces become more sophisticated and flexible, they may also introduce unforeseen interactions between software layers and safety protocols.

Lynk & Co moved quickly after the incident gained attention. Mu Jun, the company’s deputy general manager of sales, announced on the Chinese social platform Weibo that an emergency over-the-air update had been deployed.

According to the statement, the patch adjusts the logic governing voice commands related to lighting. The goal is to ensure that spoken instructions cannot switch off headlights while the vehicle is in motion or under conditions where exterior lighting is required.

Over-the-air updates have become a standard method for automakers to address software defects without requiring dealership visits. In this case, the corrective measure was reportedly distributed soon after the event surfaced publicly.

Drivers of brands such as Zeekr and Deepal allegedly tested broad phrases like “turn off all lights” and found that their vehicles could also deactivate exterior lighting systems through voice input. While these were informal user experiments rather than documented crashes, they suggest that similar vulnerabilities may exist across multiple platforms.

It remains unclear whether vehicles sold outside China are affected. The Lynk & Co Z20 is marketed in Europe under the name Lynk & Co 02, but no confirmation has been issued regarding international software configurations or potential exposure in other markets.


Balancing Smart Features and Safety Controls

Automotive lighting systems have traditionally been tightly integrated with mechanical and electronic safeguards. Critical functions such as headlights are typically designed with redundant controls to prevent accidental shutdown.

As manufacturers integrate artificial intelligence and conversational voice assistants, the interface between convenience features and safety-critical hardware becomes more complex. A command phrased ambiguously—or interpreted too broadly—can trigger unintended outcomes if safeguards are insufficient.
