New App Update Expands Access for Early Owners
Rivian is preparing a software update that will give drivers of earlier R1T and R1S models built between 2021 and 2024 a new way to access their vehicles. Through version 3.9 of the company’s mobile application for iPhone, an Apple Watch companion feature will allow certain remote functions without relying on a traditional key fob.
Once installed, the smartwatch app enables users to lock, unlock, and initiate driving using their wrist device. This marks a notable shift for first-generation vehicles, which until now depended on smartphones or physical keys for entry and startup.
The update was first highlighted by RivianTrackr, which cited information included in the app’s release notes.

Hardware Requirements and Cost Considerations
Although the feature does not require additional Rivian hardware, it does depend on compatible Apple equipment. In the United States, the most affordable Apple Watch model with cellular capability currently starts at $299. Owners who do not already use a cellular-enabled version would need to purchase one to fully take advantage of remote functionality without carrying a phone.
For drivers who already wear a compatible smartwatch, there is no added expense beyond installing the updated app. However, the requirement for cellular connectivity may limit adoption among those using Wi-Fi–only versions.
This setup effectively turns the Apple Watch into a proximity key substitute, though it does not replicate every aspect of Rivian’s newer digital access system.
How the Watch-Based Access Works
According to documentation tied to version 3.9, the smartwatch application must remain active on the screen to function as a key. In practical terms, that means the app cannot run entirely in the background. To begin driving, the user must open the watch interface before entering the vehicle.
Beyond basic entry and startup, the watch can trigger the alarm, set a desired battery charge level, and adjust cabin climate settings. These additions broaden remote control capabilities beyond simple locking and unlocking.
However, the experience differs from passive digital entry systems that operate automatically when a driver approaches.
Differences From Second-Generation Digital Key
Rivian’s more recent 2025 model year R1T and R1S vehicles come standard with an integrated digital key stored directly in smartphone wallets. This system functions similarly to contactless payment cards: when the phone is nearby, the vehicle unlocks automatically. It locks again when the device moves away.
In contrast, owners of first-generation models using the Apple Watch solution must interact directly with the watch display to perform actions. There is no automatic detection or seamless hands-free entry.
Another distinction lies in device compatibility. Rivian’s built-in digital key works with a broader range of hardware, including Apple iPhones, Apple Watches, Google Pixel devices, and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The new watch-based option for earlier vehicles is currently tied to Apple’s ecosystem.
Notably, the companion watch app will also be accessible to second-generation owners, offering them an additional control interface even though their vehicles already support passive digital entry.

Availability Timeline
At the time of writing, version 3.9 of Rivian’s mobile application has not yet appeared in the public app store. The company is expected to roll out the update in the coming weeks.
For early adopters of Rivian’s electric pickup and SUV, the development represents an incremental improvement rather than a complete technological overhaul. While it stops short of delivering full wallet-based digital key integration, it expands convenience for those willing to use compatible wearable hardware.
As software increasingly defines the ownership experience of electric vehicles, incremental feature rollouts like this illustrate how manufacturers continue to refine functionality long after initial delivery.
