Honda Restructures as Financial Pressure Builds
Honda has announced a major shift in its global strategy, confirming that several previously planned electric vehicles will no longer reach production. The decision affects the company’s internally developed 0 Series electric models, including both the sedan and crossover variants, along with the related Acura RSX electric SUV.
The announcement came as part of a broader corporate restructuring initiative revealed by Honda Motor Co. in Japan. According to the company, the move is intended to stabilize operations and address significant financial challenges that have emerged across several key markets.
As a result of the restructuring, development work on these EV projects will be halted worldwide, including in the United States, where some of the vehicles had originally been planned for production and sale.

Competitive Pressure in Global EV Markets
One of the factors influencing Honda’s decision is the rapid evolution of the global electric vehicle industry. In recent years, automakers—particularly from China—have significantly accelerated their development cycles, releasing new EV models with shorter timelines and increasingly advanced digital features.
These companies often integrate software-based services and connected technologies that appeal strongly to consumers in fast-growing Asian markets. As a result, competition in the EV sector has intensified, placing additional pressure on traditional manufacturers.
Honda acknowledged that its own development pace has struggled to match the speed of newer competitors in certain regions. This dynamic has affected the company’s ability to maintain a strong position in some Asian markets, where EV innovation and product turnover are occurring quickly.
Slower Growth in the U.S. EV Segment
Market conditions in the United States have also influenced Honda’s strategy. While electric vehicle adoption continues to increase, growth has not accelerated as quickly as many manufacturers predicted several years ago.
The slower-than-expected expansion of the EV market has forced some companies to reconsider their product plans. In Honda’s case, the company has chosen to discontinue the 0 Series sedan and crossover, as well as the Acura RSX EV, across all global markets.
Earlier announcements had already indicated delays for certain models. The Honda 0 Saloon, for example, had recently been postponed until 2027. However, other vehicles in the program had been expected to launch much sooner, making the cancellation particularly notable because it arrived relatively late in the development process.
A Ground-Up Electric Platform Now Abandoned
The cancelled vehicles were not minor projects. The 0 Series program represented a completely new EV platform developed internally by Honda. Unlike some of the company’s other electric offerings, these vehicles were not based on external partnerships or shared architectures.
For instance, Honda’s current Prologue electric SUV uses technology developed in cooperation with General Motors. In contrast, the 0 Series models were designed from the ground up using Honda’s own engineering resources.
Production for at least one of the vehicles had been planned for Ohio, highlighting the company’s intention to build a dedicated EV lineup specifically for the North American market.
With the program now discontinued, a significant amount of research, engineering, and manufacturing preparation will effectively go unused.
Financial Impact of the Decision
Honda estimates that the restructuring will carry substantial financial consequences. The company projects total losses of up to 1.2 trillion yen, equivalent to roughly $15.7 billion.
This figure includes expenses related to cancelled development programs, anticipated lost revenue from the scrapped vehicles, and adjustments tied to the company’s operations in China, where business conditions have recently weakened.
Such a large write-down illustrates the scale of Honda’s investment in projects that will now never reach customers.
Some Elements of the Program Will Continue
Although the primary 0 Series vehicles are being cancelled, parts of the broader project will still move forward in certain markets.
Honda confirmed that the 0 Series Alpha concept, first presented previously, is expected to enter production for selected regions, including India and parts of Asia. These markets continue to see growing demand for electrified vehicles, and Honda appears to view them as strategic opportunities for future EV expansion.
However, the company has not yet provided detailed information about additional electric models planned for North America or Europe.
Hybrid Vehicles Become a Key Focus
In the near term, Honda plans to strengthen its presence in the hybrid vehicle segment rather than pushing aggressively into new fully electric models.
Hybrid technology has long been one of the company’s core competencies, and it remains a popular option among consumers who want improved efficiency without fully transitioning to battery-electric vehicles.
By expanding hybrid offerings, Honda hopes to maintain competitiveness while the broader EV market continues to evolve.

Questions About Honda’s Long-Term EV Strategy
The cancellation of the 0 Series raises questions about Honda’s long-term direction in the electric vehicle industry. On one hand, halting development may help the company limit financial losses during a challenging period.
On the other hand, global EV adoption continues to increase, and many automakers are investing heavily to expand their electric lineups.
Energy markets also remain volatile, with fluctuating oil prices encouraging some consumers to consider alternatives to gasoline-powered vehicles.
For Honda, stepping back from major EV projects at this moment could create challenges in maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing automotive landscape.
