Subaru Expands Its Electric Lineup
Subaru is rapidly increasing its presence in the electric vehicle market. After previously offering a limited EV selection, the company is expected to have four fully electric models available by the end of the year.
The newly introduced 2027 Subaru Getaway represents a significant step in that strategy. As the brand’s largest electric vehicle so far, it is designed as a three-row SUV capable of carrying up to seven passengers, targeting families and buyers seeking more interior space.

Platform and Performance Details
The Getaway shares its underlying architecture with the 2027 Toyota Highlander, but Subaru has tuned the vehicle to deliver stronger performance. At launch, it will be offered with a dual-motor setup and standard all-wheel drive, producing approximately 420 horsepower.
This output makes it the most powerful production model Subaru has built to date. According to the manufacturer, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds, placing it among the quicker vehicles in its segment.
In comparison, its platform counterpart from Toyota reaches a lower peak output, highlighting Subaru’s focus on performance-oriented tuning for this model.
Battery and Charging Capabilities
Powering the Getaway is a 95.8 kWh battery pack, supporting DC fast charging at rates of up to 150 kW through a native NACS charging port. Under optimal conditions, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes.
Subaru estimates that this configuration delivers a driving range exceeding 300 miles on a full charge. A second version, expected to arrive later, will feature a smaller 77 kWh battery while retaining the dual-motor layout. Although official figures have not yet been released, its range is likely to fall below the initial model.
Design and Capability
Visually, the Getaway adopts styling cues seen across Subaru’s electric lineup, particularly at the front, while the rear design shows similarities to its Toyota counterpart.
The SUV is engineered with versatility in mind. It offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, supporting light off-road use. Subaru also states that the vehicle can tow up to 3,500 pounds, adding to its practicality for outdoor and recreational activities.
Interior Layout and Space
Inside, buyers can choose between a six-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs or a seven-seat layout with a bench. This flexibility allows the vehicle to cater to different passenger needs.
Cargo capacity stands at 15.9 cubic feet with all seats in use. Folding the third row increases available space to 45.6 cubic feet, making the Getaway suitable for larger loads when needed.
Technology and Comfort Features
The cabin is equipped with a 14-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard. Additional features include heated front seats and wireless compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
For device charging, the center console includes dual 15-watt wireless charging pads, while rear passengers benefit from four USB-C ports.
Higher trims add further comfort enhancements, such as a fixed panoramic glass roof, heated seats in multiple rows, ventilated seating for front and second-row occupants, and a heated steering wheel.
Market Position and Launch Timeline
The 2027 Getaway is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in late 2026, with pricing details to be announced closer to its release. It will join Subaru’s growing EV portfolio, which includes models like the Uncharted, Solterra, and Trailseeker.
In terms of competition, the Getaway will enter a segment that includes other three-row electric SUVs such as the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. Its combination of performance, range, and interior space positions it as a strong contender in this category.

Outlook
With the introduction of the Getaway, Subaru is moving beyond entry-level electrification and into larger, more versatile vehicles. By combining all-wheel drive capability, family-oriented design, and competitive range figures, the company aims to appeal to a broader audience.
As more details become available, the model’s pricing and real-world efficiency will determine how well it performs against established rivals.
