Expanding the EV Lead
Chinese electric vehicle makers continue to outpace Western brands in battery and charging technology, with the gap widening rapidly. BYD, one of the country’s largest EV manufacturers, has recently introduced the Seal 07, a mid-size electric sedan equipped with its second-generation Blade lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The car also supports the company’s new 1,500-kilowatt “Flash” charging stations, demonstrating how advanced Chinese EVs have become.

Range and Pricing
The Seal 07 achieves a 705-kilometer range under China’s CLTC cycle, roughly equivalent to 300 miles on the U.S. EPA standard, which is typically more conservative. Despite its performance, the starting price is 169,900 yuan ($24,600), approximately $10,000 less than a base Tesla Model 3 in China, which is priced around 235,500 yuan ($34,100). This positions the Seal 07 as a highly competitive option for consumers seeking advanced technology at a lower price point.
Battery and Charging Performance
The sedan uses a 69 kWh “Short Blade” battery, which lacks some features of BYD’s flagship Long Blade pack but still maintains compatibility with the Flash chargers. In a public demonstration, the vehicle charged from 10% to 70% in just 4 minutes 51 seconds, adding 422 kilometers (262 miles) of range. Full charging to 97% took only 8 minutes 44 seconds, delivering a total of 686 kilometers on the display. Even when converted to the EPA method, these figures surpass most EVs currently available in the U.S.
Comparative Context
For reference, a Lucid Gravity at a 350 kW fast charger adds roughly 200 miles in 12.5 minutes, while a Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD requires 35 minutes to reach 80% on a 250 kW Supercharger, with the final 20% taking an additional hour. The Seal 07’s Flash charging narrows the gap between electric and gasoline refueling times, offering performance far beyond most American EVs.
Safety and Reliability
BYD has conducted extensive testing, including simultaneous nail penetration and Flash charging cycles, achieving 500 cycles without battery fire or explosion. The battery maintains strong charging efficiency even at temperatures as low as -22°F (-30°C). Unlike many EVs that slow charging past 80% to protect the battery, the Blade 2.0 pack sustains high speeds, thanks to BYD’s decades of battery manufacturing expertise.
Advanced Features
The Seal 07 also incorporates a lidar-based ADAS system known as “God’s Eye,” paired with an adaptive suspension that uses cameras to monitor the road and adjust ride dynamics. Additional features include massaging seats, a refrigerated compartment, phone-as-key functionality, and a dedicated “dog mode.” This positions the sedan closer to premium flagship models in terms of comfort and technology.

Global Expansion
BYD has announced plans to export its Flash charging technology to regions including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific. These are the areas where BYD is aggressively expanding its EV footprint. However, the car is unlikely to arrive in the U.S. soon due to high tariffs on Chinese EVs and restrictions on Chinese software, limiting direct competition with American models.
