Ford EV Sales Hit New Highs
Ford reported its strongest electric vehicle sales month ever in August 2025, with a combined 10,671 units sold across the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit models. That figure marks a 19.3% year-over-year increase, underscoring strong consumer demand despite policy uncertainty and growing competition.
Mach-E Leads the Charge
The Mustang Mach-E continues to be Ford’s best-performing EV. In August alone, 7,226 Mach-Es were sold, representing a 35.3% year-over-year increase and setting a new monthly sales record for the model. Since its debut in late 2020, the Mach-E has become one of America’s most popular electric crossovers, combining practicality, performance, and a competitive price point.
The model’s recent 2026 refresh has helped maintain momentum. Built in Mexico, the updated Mach-E is actually cheaper this year despite new tariffs. It now comes standard with a heat pump to improve cold-weather efficiency and offers the latest BlueCruise driver-assistance system with hands-free driving and automatic lane changes.
F-150 Lightning and E-Transit Performance
The F-150 Lightning, Ford’s all-electric pickup, also saw robust demand with 3,217 units sold, a 21.2% increase compared to the same month last year. It remains one of the few mass-market electric trucks available today, appealing to both commercial buyers and retail customers.
By contrast, the E-Transit cargo van struggled. Sales fell 76% year-over-year, with only 228 units delivered in August. Analysts suggest that shifting fleet priorities and limited supply may have contributed to the decline.
Ford’s Broader Electrification Push
Beyond its fully electric lineup, Ford’s hybrid sales rose 14.5% in August, totaling 18,773 units. While Ford does not break out model-specific hybrid sales, the combined success of EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids drove total electrified vehicle sales to 29,444 units—a 16.2% increase year-over-year.
Ford has also sweetened its EV ownership experience by continuing to offer customers a complimentary Level 2 home charger and installation, a perk designed to ease the transition to electric mobility.
Policy-Driven Demand Surge
Ford’s record month mirrors the broader industry trend. Automakers like General Motors, Hyundai, and Kia also posted record EV sales in August, as consumers rushed to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit before it expires on September 30, 2025. Analysts expect the third quarter to set all-time highs for EV sales, followed by a potential slowdown in the fall once incentives are withdrawn.
Looking Toward the Future
While the Mach-E and Lightning have carried Ford’s EV momentum so far, the company acknowledges it cannot rely on just two models indefinitely. After several delays and billions in losses, Ford is preparing for its next big step: a new electric truck due in 2027.
This upcoming vehicle is expected to:
-
Start at $30,000, undercutting most competitors
-
Ride on an all-new EV architecture
-
Be produced using radically different manufacturing processes to reduce costs
Ford sees this model as essential to remaining competitive in a post-tax-credit EV market, where affordability and efficiency will matter more than ever.
Conclusion
Ford’s record-breaking August sales highlight both the strength of its current EV lineup and the urgency of preparing for what comes next. The Mach-E’s historic sales month reinforces its role as a cornerstone of Ford’s electric strategy, while the Lightning continues to prove that demand for electric trucks is real. However, with federal incentives expiring and competition intensifying, Ford’s long-term success will depend on its ability to innovate and deliver the next generation of affordable EVs.
